Glacier Hiking

Finally got this blog up and running. It seems pretty straight forward, but bare with me as I figure it out. After 4 flights and 35 hours of traveling, I arrived in Auckland. From here, I kicked off the trip with yet another flight to Christchurch, which is on the south island of New Zealand. Yeah, it was a ridiculous amount of traveling. The plan is to travel around the south island and then make my way back to Auckland because that's where I'm flying out of. So in this .. more ..

2/3/2009 - Continuing my Unofficial Tour of New Zealand Bike Shops

I actually DID get up relatively early the next morning. It is go time, and I have a fairly long day ahead (about 60 miles). As I start to push my bike, I notice something. The back wheel does not freely spin. Hmmm - I am pretty sure that "spinning" is high on the official list of "Things that Wheels Do". I leave my stuff at the backpacker's (Duke's is very nice and lets me put it back in the locked room again) to re-visit the fine young man who did the work yesterday. He is, indeed .. more ..

Australia continues its visa sanctions for Fiji

Australia's Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said Fiji would continue to have limitations placed on their access to Australian visas until the militant government demonstrates democratic policies. Smith also warned that expelling New Zealand's Acting High Commissioner Caroline McDonald would considerably work against the progress to a fair and lawful society. Ms McDonald is waiting a pending decision from the Fijian military regarding her future, because the New Zealand gove .. more ..

Turn the world over on its side and everything loose will land in Los Angeles.

I’m not sure about all the connotations that the title implies but I am at a loose-end and shortly to end up in Los Angeles. Presently I’m in Auckland airport and pondering the knock-on effect that caused me to start rolling on this mini-adventure. The blame lies fairly and squarely with Air New Zealand’s Grab-A-Seat website. A [...]

Australia Travel Market is targeting Kiwis wanting to go to Australia

Kiwi entrepreneur Dave Simmons this week launched the new approach for New Zealand travellers heading across the Tasman. After 15 years' working in the travel industry in Britain, Simmons has returned with his family to New Zealand, bringing what he says is the unique "meta-search" business model.A less-techy sounding name for meta-searching is "price comparison"."From a consumer perspective, it's like going to a shopping mall and going to all the sho .. more ..

New Zealand & South America Photos

Heres some photos of our recent travels in New Zealand, and South America. We are currently in Uyuni, in Bolivia, after doing a 4 day tour of the Bolivian salt flats. It was awesome, and we got some great photos (the ones at the bottom of this post). We were with a couple from London on the tour, and we all got on great. We are kicking around in Uyuni, which is the town closest to the salt flats. We have our bus booked to go to La Paz, the Bolivian capital tonight. It is a .. more ..

New Zealand & Sneaky Showers

Me and Vicks discovered a way to halve the costs of our showering today. The place that offers showers for $5 (yeah, I know.. what a rip off) gives out a key for each person who uses the services. However, the key works for the male and female showers. Our ingenious plan involves Vicky paying for the shower key, then me borrowing it, opening the male showers, and then finally giving it back to Vicks. Bloody clever eh? The only fault that could occur is someone sneaking in to my shower .. mor....

New Zealand Nomads

We are currently travelling round the north island in New Zealand in our hired camper van, which we picked up in Auckland on our second day here. It's very cool, is in very good condition, and has a set of all the usual camping supplies you would expect from such a vehicle. We had to cruise down to Wellington pretty sharpish to meet up with a friend we met in Sydney, as he promised us a good music festival on our arrival. We got there yesterday, and spend the day drinking and having fu .. mor....

Surprising Sydney

Travel tastes its best when expectations are exceeded, and nowhere on our trip has this been more the case than in Sydney. We planned a pitiful three nights in the city, really nothing more than a leisurely layover between New Zealand and London. Wow, did we ever regret that decision! Sydney, and indeed Australia, go to the top of our list of places to return to in ? say ? thirty years when we are able to enjoy extended travel once more ;o)With so little time to spare, we .. more ..
